"Transportation,
supportive neighborhoods, and jobs are all linked together."
The 52nd Street Community Transit Hub design illustrates how this
can be achieved in Philadelphia. The project was awarded a special
commendation by the Transportation Ideas Competition for which it
was submitted. The overall view (top) shows the portal linking the
two levels of the new regional rail station to the plaza which has
a farmer's market in the center, and trolley, bus, and van access
around its edges. The farmer's market is overlooked by a large video
display screen for both transit information and public entertainment.
On the far side of the plaza is the Gateway building. Visible beyond
it is parking.
